Few activities at the amusement park evoke a sense of child-like joy and nostalgia like riding a bumper car. It is hard to think of a trip to the fair without recalling the warmth of the thrill and excitement of attempting to ram your friends without mercy – or in much later years, your children. Despite the seemingly repetitive nature of the activity, bumper cars remain one of the must-have attractions of any trip to the amusement park.
What is it about Bumper Cars that is so timeless? This article will explore the appeal of bumper cars, from the basics to their lasting impact on generations across the globe.
A History of Bumper Cars
Bumper cars were first developed before the World War I; even the Wright Brothers had experimented with electromagnetically charged cars before those experiments had translated into amusements for fairgoers.
The first version of bumper cars as we recognize them today were effectively invented in 1920 by inventor/entrepreneur Edwin Potter. Potter called his invention “Dodg’em” and entered into an exclusivity contract with the renowned automotive manufacturer, The Howell & Co, of Cleveland Ohio. Potter was the first to develop an amusement vehicle that used an eclectic system and asked people to ride these floor-mounted vehicles within an enclosed area.
Until the late 1950s, bumper cars had an accelerator bar with a handgrip. This is surely why people used to call these cars “joyrides”. The use of joysticks and steering wheels gradually replaced the bar and grip combination.
An Appeal Across the Ages
What is it about bumper cars that have kept them so popular over the years? In many ways, bumper cars are an activity that appeals to all age groups.
For the Very Young
It’s the perfect way for kids to experience their own little driving adventure safely and with no parental supervision. Not only does it offer a great bonding experience for parents and their tots — it also works to stimulate the senses and encourage exploration of space and freedom from fright. Plus, it’s a great introduction to the concept of “taking turns” and understanding a bit more about road safety.
For the Pre-Teens
With bumper cars, daring pre-teens can experience a bit of the freedom they are so desperate to reach — but with safety measures to keep them protected and grounded. Bumper cars also provide an excellent opportunity for pre-teens to test out some of their driving skills, and also offers an adrenaline-filled twist that provide a great laugh all round.
For the Teens
What teen doesn’t love the thrill of “breaking the rules”? Bumper cars offer a safe way for the more daring teens to let go of their emotions and express themselves through movement and a “free for all” style. It’s also a great opportunity for teens to test new skills and challenge their knowledge about boundaries and limits — all in a safe, fun environment.
For the Adults
Generally speaking, when adults most are presented with bumper cars, they cannot help but reminisce about their childhood. They will frequently crack a smile, either while they recall their childhood memories or while they observe the fun that their children and grandchildren are having. Therefore, bumper cars provide an excellent opportunity for adults to join in on the fun or simply to sit back and watch — but with a smile on their face.
Bumper Cars Around the Globe
The beauty of bumper cars is that they can be found in amusement parks and fairgrounds across the globe.
In the United States
From New York to California, bumper cars can be found in nearly every major fairground across the country — from The National Fair in Springfield to Dollywood in Tennessee. The iconic Coney Island in Brooklyn also houses several bumper car enclosures which draw tourists and locals alike.
In Europe
Europe is renowned for its variety of fairs and amusement parks — and bumper cars are a major draw for Europeans of all ages. From Legoland in Denmark to the Oktoberfest in Germany, bumper cars remain a staple attraction.
In Asia
Bumper cars remain popular in many Asian countries, from China to Thailand. Even though the Asian market is a lot more gear-orientated, many buzzer car venues still exist across the continent — and remain as popular as ever.
Bumper Cars – No Longer Just for Kids
Bumper cars have come a long way since their invention in 1920 — but the concept remains largely unchanged. The timelessness of bumper cars is part of their allure, as the attraction remains one of the most popular pastimes for children, teens and adults. And with their presence at amusement parks and fairs on every corner of the globe, it is clear that bumper cars will continue to be a memorable activity at family-oriented parks and fairs for generations to come!
