Exploring Moab’s Rock Formations: Distinctive Geology of Utah’s Red Rock Country
Over millions of years, Utah’s landscapes have been continuously shaped, sculpted and transformed, forming breathtaking canyons, arches and other spectacular formations. Nestled amid this erosional paradise lies Moab. Seemingly out of another time, Red Rock Country stands the test of time, considered by many to be one of the most unique places in the world.
The rock formations are ever changing and each new discovery will make you feel like you are the first to lay its eyes on it. Here we explore the distinguishing characteristics of Moab’s rock formations and why Utah’s Red Rock Country is so special.
The Unique Geology of Moab
Moab, Utah, lies in a geologic region known as “The Basin and Range Province.” This area is full of mountains and mountains ranges separated by flat, relatively featureless areas called basins. This uplifting of sedimentary rocks and the subsequent erosion over thousands of years has created the topography and rock formations today. It is the rock formations that make Moab so special, beyond its beautiful scenery. The layers of sedimentary rock, when put in the hands of the test of time, which have amazing results.
Salt Valleys
The landscape of Moab creates an experience like no other. The diversity and depth of the topography create a dynamic terrain where the surroundings continuously change. Geologically, Moab is part of a unique and ancient rock formation that makes up what is known as a salt valley. Salt valleys are formed when large salt beds are laid down and are eventually covered by sedimentary rocks. Over time, water and salt dissolve the sedimentary rocks and create a deep valley that is anywhere from 300 to 1000 feet below the surrounding terrain. The salt beds form a protective layer that stretch for hundreds of miles and act to protect the underlying rock formations from erosion.
Entrada Sandstone
The primary rock formation in Moab is the Entrada sandstone. This is the layer of sandstone that was laid down millions of years ago that makes up most of the stunning features featured in Arches National Park. Entrada Sandstone erodes at a much slower rate compared to other formations. This is because it is an incredibly dense sandstone with very tight grain, making it surprisingly resistant to erosion. It provides the perfect surface for creating the iconic arches and spires that give Moab it’s distinctive look.
The Various Landforms of Moab
The rock formations of Moab are some of the most distinct and beautiful that the world has to offer. From snow-capped mountains to endless canyons and arches, the landforms of Moab are truly one-of-a-kind.
Here is a list of some of the defining landforms of Red Rock Country.
-
Canyons: Canyons are deeply eroded valleys in the earth’s surface. The most iconic in Moab are the Colorado River Canyons.
-
Plateaus: Plateaus are relatively flat landforms that stand high above their surrounding landscape. The Moab Plateau, standing at over 5000 feet, is one of the most impressive features in the area.
-
Arches: Arches are natural rock formations created when Entrada sandstone erodes and forms a distinctive, curved opening.
-
Fins: Fins are long, narrow rock formations that have been sculpted by wind and water erosion over thousands of years.
-
Hoodoos: Hoodoos are tall spires of rock that can be found scattered across the landscape.
-
Balanced Rocks: Balanced rocks are single, large rocks that stand atop a tiny pedestal, seemingly defying gravity.
Exploring Moab’s Rock Formations
The best way to appreciate the landforms of Moab is to visit them up close. From white-water rafting in the Colorado River to the hundreds of miles of jeep trails and mountain bike routes, there are plenty of ways to explore and appreciate the geology of Moab. Hiking, biking, rafting, canyoneering and camping are some of the best ways to get up close and personal with the landscape and witness the breathtaking views that abound. You can also take a four-wheel drive vehicle and take it down some of the classic four-wheel drives that the locals have developed over the years. There are scores of routes, but my two favorites are Moab Rim and Potash Road.
The sandstone formations of Moab are some of the most incredible natural formations on Earth, and this type of landform exists nowhere else in the world. Geologically speaking, it is an amazing place because of its history, topography, and dynamic rock formations. It is from coming to this part of the Earth that you can truly appreciate the immense power and beauty of the elements in motion.
Moab’s rock formations are unique, and the geology of Utah’s red rock country explain why. The rock formations of Moab are ever changing, constantly being sculpted and transformed by the erosive power of wind and water. From salt valleys to the iconic Entrada sandstone, this area is full of spectacular features that allow us to experience geological time and Mother Nature in motion. Exploring Moab’s rock formations through hiking, biking, rafting and off-roading is an unforgettable experience and one that will be cherished for a lifetime.
