Must read

Cricket is known as one of the most popular sports in the world. As such, it has its own unique set of positions and outfield players, which form its unique field system. Field positions in cricket are key components to its tactical approach, much like in any other sport. A cricket field is divided into various positions based on the roles they are required to perform. Therefore, it is important to have a good understanding of the various positions and their related duties and responsibilities in order to be a successful team player.

Definitions of Cricket Field Positions

The 12 positions commonly referred to as cricket field positions are broken down into two primary groups: fielding and batting. In cricket, the fielding team is tasked with catching out the opponent’s batsmen and defending the wicket from the other team’s batsmen. The batting team is tasked with controlling the ball, accumulating runs and batting out the innings successfully. Here are the definitions and roles of the different field positions.

Fielding Positions

Wicketkeeper – The player who stands behind the stumps and is tasked with catching or stumping the batsman out when they are trying to play a shot.

Slips – A group of players who stand close to the wicket in order to take catches that are at or near where the batsman is playing a shot.

Gully –A fielder positioned at the point where the slip cordon and the midwicket fielder meet.

Mid-On –A fielder positioned just inside the 30-yard circle.

Mid-Off – The fielder positioned just on the line of the 30-yard circle.

Point – A fielder positioned in front and to the left of the batsman.

Short Leg – A fielder positioned in front and to the right of the batsman.

Third Man – The fielder positioned behind the slips cordon and to the left of the wicketkeeper.

Batting Positions

Opener – The batsman who faces the first over and looks to score runs while also allowing time for the other batsman to settle in.

Middle Order – The batsman positioned between the opener and the closer and tasked with consolidating the innings and accumulating runs.

Closer – The batsman tasked with hitting boundaries to help propel the scoring rate and hopefully close out the innings successfully.

All-Rounder – The batsman who is also a part-time bowler and is expected to bowl several overs during the innings and potentially bat in any position from opener to closer.

Significance of Cricket Field Positions

Cricket field positions are designed to enhance the team’s chances of winning the match by positioning fielders in strategic locations on the field in order to limit the runs and chances of the opponent’s batting. While each field position has a specific role to play in the overall success of the team, the significance of their impact on the team’s success varies depending on the situation, which can change rapidly during the course of the match.

Positions During an Innings

The field positions typically change over the course of an innings depending on the situation. The captain will set their field positions at the start of the innings and can choose to move players around as the situation changes. For example, if a batsman is known to be a big hitter, the captain may choose to move fielders to the boundaries or deep midwicket to reduce the likelihood of the batsman hitting a boundary.
